My first visit here, back in the spring of 2019, I had actually arranged to meet friends for lunch at a different bar near the Puerta de la Carne market. It turned out they were running late so I told them I would pop into La Estación for a quick cervecita and wait for them. Then it turned out that I was having such a nice time talking to the family who run this very cosy and comfortable bar, that by the time my friends arrived I suggested we stay put. And we weren’t disappointed. Since then I keep coming back whenever I’m in the neighbourhood.
I love the bar dining area, which has now expanded into an adjacent dining space, and there is also an ample side walk terrace. The menu is short but somehow has everything, and if it doesn’t then everything else is on the daily chalkboard “fuera de carta”. There’s a good selection of charcuterie, cheeses and cold dish starters, also comfort food stews and excellent grilled meats, and the fritos are to die for, all crispy crunchy deliciousness… bacalao frito, calamares, pavía de merluza, some of the best I’ve had anywhere. Also a very good wine list. Service is terrific, with a close-knit team that wants you to be having the best time they can offer, and extra points for having proper orujo blanco as a postprandial digestif.
